AFRICA MONTH!
The
month of May is one of the most significant months in the African continent .The black nation embraces its
beauty and unity .25th May marks a tremendous day in the African
history. It marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity.
On
this month we celebrate the unity of the diverse countries in the black soil. We
learn to love and appreciate our fellow brothers and sisters throughout the
continent. . A lot of countries acknowledge it as a public holiday.
Charity
Kamela (19), a resident from Soshanguve Block H said that she does not really
have background information about Africa month because it is probably not as
popular as other holidays.
Africa
month (May) has been commemorated through means of fashion, beauty, art and
festivals throughout South Africa. On the fashion point of view, the headwrap has a lot of significance. Different
ethnic groups have their own reasons as to what the headwrap (doek) symbolises.
“As
a young lady I value Africa Month because it is not everyday where you witness
African’s uniting. I love the African print clothes, especially the headwraps
from Zambia.” said Matlhatsi Dikwabane (21), a Tshwane University of Technology
student.
As
much as Africa month is important, it is not as popular as it should be. Many
people are unclear of it’s historical background. Nozipho Ntshangase (21) ,a
Tshwane North College student said that she did not know anything about Africa
day until she heard a friend mention it. She feels that the day and month needs
more recognition. She added by saying that more information should be
disseminated concerning Africa month.
Although we celebrate Africa month every
year, fellow Africans still experience xenophobic attacks, especially in South
Africa. Winile Mdletye (19) ,an Education student at Tshwane University of
Technology said that we should be a united front and not discriminate against
each other. We are all humans and have the right to live freely and happily
anywhere we want. I am totally against xenophobia. In Africa we are one and
should not mistreat each other for any reason.”
Quineth Mziyako(22),A Swaziland inhabitant
who now resides in Soshanguve Block L refers to black as being beautiful. It is
the colour of confidence, style and African beauty should be embraced and
celebrated on a daily basis. Unity in diversity should be the language we speak
as Africans.
